An Army officer was at the weekend allegedly shot dead by suspected armed robbers at Mokola in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The incident took place on Friday between 7 p.m. and
8 p.m. when the officer was entering Litmauk
Barracks in the ancient city.
The army officer was among participants in the
just-concluded army promotion examinations from
lieutenant to captain, investigations have shown.
The robbers, who were coming from an operation,
apparently thought the officer would be an obstruction
in their escape bid and, on sighting him, opened fire.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Army Public
Relations Officer, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Lt.-Col.
Andrew Idachaba, said the Army had reported the
matter to the appropriate authorities.
But Idachaba neither gave the name of the officer nor
the hospital where the corpse was kept.
Last Wednesday (March 3), suspected assassins
killed the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) in Atiba Local Government Area, Alhaji Azeez
Adegbile, at his home in Oyo town.
